T.E.A.M. -- *Teen *Education *Awareness *Mentors

T.E.A.M. is looking for 8th graders to serve on the Teen Voice Village boards.  Do you have a contact for a teacher or advisor that would be willing to help me recruit your 8th graders?  Please email us.

T.E.A.M. meet on Thursday, November 17th - here are the meeting notes.

•             We have the directory printed and updated.  We need to disburse it to the families who have joined us in a way to get some public response to the directory being finished.  I have thought of a fundraiser or just a “party”, but would like more ideas.  I would love to have an idea that could invite others in the community (families and members) to join as well.  Ideas?  Thoughts?  Would you be willing to join a small committee to put something together?

•             Funding is needed.  As the state looks to cut more and more state funding it is vital to our sustainability to be able to have funds from many other sectors in the community.  It is about funding, yet it is about “buy in” from those persons who support us.  I am looking for ideas to engage other businesses, community members, and people in the financial support of our organization.  Even a $10 donation makes a family or person feel like they are making a difference for our youth.  Would you be willing to join a small committee to brainstorm this need?

•             POSITIVE NEWS!  Our Teen Voice is approved by the Village!  We have ten teens serving and a call for more teens to serve!  Give these teens a huge “high five” next time you see them: Madison C, Ryan E, Kelly K, Carly B, Kyle G, Phil D, Leah G, Alice W, Jordan G, and Brienna B.

Teens given green light to serve village

T.E.A.M. has been informed by Rebecca Ewald that all of our Waterford Union High School teens have been approved to join the Village of Waterford government as a Teen Voice for Waterford! The Village is really looking forward to this – and so was the Board – in fact, the representatives noted that they can’t wait to meet them (the teens).

Village of Waterford boards and committees are about to get a youth injection, as officials have formalized the process that would allow area youth to begin serving on the various government panels.

Back in January teens from T.E.A.M. (Teen, Education, Awareness, Mentors), an organization that helps teens make good decisions and seeks to get them involved in their community, approached village officials about joining the ranks of elected officials, much in the same manner they've already done in Burlington and gotten the green light to do in Rochester.

T.E.A.M. community outreach coordinator Christina Weigler said 11teens were already serving on boards and commissions within western Racine County.

The proposal was met with an overwhelmingly positive response from village officials, thus paving the way for the recent passage of the resolution that formalizes the agreement for the teens to serve.

Among the panels on which the youth will sit side-by-side with members include the Village Board, Finance Committee, Plan Commission, Library Board, Public Works and various ad hoc and special committees.

Under the agreement, the Village Board will appoint two middle or high school students to each of those governing bodies for a one-year period each May pending a written recommendation from their principal or other school official.

The catch is that while the teens will be able to participate in dialogue, they will not carry the voting rights that elected officials have.

They will also be barred from attending closed-door sessions or be allowed to miss meetings, the later of which could result in their removal of the respective committees they serve on.

T.E.A.M. is inviting community members to become part of a new group seeking to create a better Waterford for our children. The Waterford community with the help of  T.E.A.M. is building a network of individuals and families who support our mission to build a stronger community for the education and support of our children. We are asking community members to collectively promote positive cultural change and healthy choices. Our emphasis is on preventing alcohol, tobacco and drug use by our youth.

Please help us create a new list of individuals, families, and community members to join the fight to keep our children safe. In joining this network our youth will understand the commitment we share as a community to prevent the use of tobacco, alcohol and other drugs by our youth. By signing the Network Agreement you agree to:

  • Encourage wholesome activities for our youth by chaperoning and not allowing tobacco, alcohol or any other drug to be brought in and consumed by underage youth who are socializing in your home.
  • Communicate with parents and appropriate adults to insure that events outside of your home will be properly chaperoned and will not include the use of tobacco, alcohol or any other drug by underage youth.
  • Support and use the community's curfew for our youth. The curfew for anyone under 18 years of age in our community is from 11:00 p.m.-5:00 a.m. on weekdays and from midnight-5:00 a.m. on weekends. Teens must remain off any street, alley, sidewalk, waterway, or any other public place, either by foot or in or on a vehicle or boat.

What is T.E.A.M. ?

T.E.A.M. is a community-wide organization that exists in order to build a stronger community for the education and support of our children. We are working to network community members, parents, educators, administrators, teens, and other professionals to help our children make healthy choices and we invite these groups to bring ideas to our organization in special regard to their exposure to alcohol and other drugs in order to build a stronger COMMUNITY through education and involvement. We need everyone to help build a safe environment for our community's growth. We need YOU !
