Mrs. Frost's First Grade Welcome to First Grade!

FIRST GRADE NEWSLETTER

February 3, 2012

READING

Our main story this week was about snakes.  We did a word web about snakes in the computer lab.  Mr. Dehne found us a great video about snakes and Marin brought in a very informative book about snakes! We even did a Venn diagram about snakes and people.

Next week we will finish up our third hardcover book!  Two more to go!  I am sending home another word list to practice with your child.  Thank you for your support.  Your child is the benefactor!

We read to our fourth grade book buddies every Friday for 20 minutes!

In order to get the SIX FLAGS TICKETS, we need to send in your child’s detailed reading log.  These are due by February 17.

SPELLING

The spelling words for February 10 are:  sticks   sun   twigs   fire   snow   mud   try   old   eat   under

MATH

We worked with graphs and measuring.  We do a lot of lessons on the smart board.  There are math links on our school web page that your child could learn from.  We did a fun money one today.

WRITING

We learned about bold interesting titles and cover pictures of books.  The children “invented” their own cover picture and title of a fictitious book.  Again, I’m enjoying the great imaginations!  We are watching every book for “bold” beginnings.  Our song on our writing poster for this unit is sung to the tune of “Pop Goes the Weasel.”   It follows.

A good beginning, middle and end help to shape your writing.

Placing details where they make sense, Pop!  It’s inviting.

You start it off with something fine.  Next comes something exciting.  Your perfect ending wraps it up

Bam!  Now you’re writing.

SOCIAL STUDIES

We seem to have a “science” unit on weather, seasons, sun and earth in our social studies big book.  The children learned a million earths would fit in the sun.  We acted out the sun going around the earth and learned the reason for the seasons.

HUNDREDS DAY IS FEBRUARY 7!

We will do many things involving the number 100.  Please send in a collection of 100 things in a shoe box or plastic bag.  We will need them by Tuesday in order to count and sort with our second grade buddies!
