3rd Grade Classroom Newsletter

January 20, 2012

WRITING

This week we started writing fables. We will be writing and finishing them up, hopefully, by next week. We continued learning how to properly organize information and our writing.

Writer’s Workshop is designed to emphasize the act of writing itself—students spend most of their time putting pencil to paper, not just learning about it. Over time, students learn to choose their own topics and to manage their own development as they work through a wide variety of writing projects in a sustained and self-directed way.

In our classroom, full class lessons are short and tightly focused on practical real-world issues. As in professional writing workshops, emphasis is placed on sharing work with the class, on peer conferencing and editing, and on the collection of a wide variety of work in a writing folder, and eventually in a portfolio.

READING & LANGUAGE ARTS

We read the fifteenth story in our first reading textbook, “A Cool Place to Visit.”  We reviewed main idea, context clues, summarizing, and multiple-meaning words.

We also worked on our plays!  We painted scenery, brought in our props, and read our plays over and over!  Play practices are under way!

In spelling we studied science winter words.

In grammar we worked on using “and” between two verbs in a sentence.

MATH

We continued unit 4, multiplication and division!  Students learned the 10s, 9s, & 3s.  We worked on many word problems using these facts.  Students learned that multiplication is repeated addition and division is the opposite of multiplication.  It is a great idea to use multiplication & division flashcards at home for practice.  It is also a good idea to practice both at the same time.  When practicing 2 x 5 = 10, please practice 10 / 5 = 2.  There will be flashcard homework too!

SCIENCE & SOCIAL STUDIES

In science we took a test on Looking at Plants and Animals

Social studies will start next week.
